What is a Soul Midwife?
A multi-faith but non-religious practitioner who gives non-intrusive emotional, mental, spiritual and physical guidance and support throughout the transition process. After my brother’s death in 2000, I explored many emotional, mental and spiritual pathways and one of the conclusions I came to was that during the process some of my family, friends and I could not accept he was going to die. In the main, we were all hoping for the miracle that never came and therefore my brother could not relate to us on this level. He was lucky enough to have met some friends and teachers that gave him that support and eased his journey. The concepts of a Soul Midwife include giving that support, not only to the dying person, but also as a comfort to the relatives during this traumatic time.
The “News”
Perhaps one of the most devasting sentences we will ever hear is “I’m sorry, there is nothing more we can do”. After the initial shock and disbelief there perhaps comes a sense of not knowing what to do, how to talk to their loved one or where to go for help. Not knowing what to do to help make their passing a good one and how to spend the precious time left is a dilemma faced by thousands of people around the world every day.
This is where Soul Midwives can help. An open heart can be as valuable as medical pain relief because it is a source of comfort and happiness amidst a room of bleeps, needles and medical jargon. Many people are now choosing to die at home with their loved ones around them, in familiar surroundings and a loving hand to hold.
The fear of dying has an irresistible magnetism. We are drawn to it, motivated by it and appalled by it. Its power over us is fundamental to our existence. It triggers our entire nervous system at even the slightest threat and, moment after moment, it drives the life functions of our internal organs.
When I come to the end of the road
and the sun has set for me,
I want no tears in a gloom-filled room.
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not too much,
and not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that once we shared,
Miss me, but let me go.
This is a journey we all must take
and each must take alone;
It’s all a part of God’s perfect plan,
a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart
go to the friends we know.
Bury your sorrows in doing good,
Miss me, but let me go.
